Methanol

Methanol can be purchased locally from a number of different sources. Chemical suppliers, fuel distributors and auto racing shops sell it in 55 gallon steel drums.  Methanol used in the BioPro must be 99.99% pure.

The price of methanol can vary greatly from less than $2.00 per gallon to as much as $5.00 per gallon depending on where you live and who you buy it from.
Since Methanol is your most expensive input in the biodiesel-making process, we recommend you research your available options.

Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide

The BioPro™ processors will accept sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH) as their base catalyst.  NaOH must be at least 98% pure.  KOH must be a minimum of 90% pure. These are common chemicals and can be purchased from chemical or agriculture supply stores.

To reduce user handling, Springboard now sells prepackaged bags of NaOH, sized specifically for the BioPro™ processors.

Base catalysts (NaOH and KOH) for BioPro biodiesel processors

Sulfuric Acid

Sulfuric acid used for BioPro biodiesel processors
The sulfuric acid used by the BioPro™ processors must have a minimum purity of 93%.  Some drain openers are composed of sulfuric acid of sufficient purity, but many of these may change their formulas from time to time, or include diluting agents.

Sulfuric acid can also be purchased in premeasured quantities from Springboard Biodiesel.
